Who is Winning in America?

Who is Winning in America?

I don’t need you to answer this question immediately. I want you to ask this question to yourself. Are you winning? Do you feel successful? Do you feel safe? Do you feel empowered? Do you feel stable?

If you are like me and 80% of the country, you cannot answer yes to all of these questions. If you are like 50% of the country, you cannot answer yes to any of these questions.

I’ve been thinking about the 2016 election when a lot of us were surprised by Donald Trump’s win. I couldn’t believe that America the great, home of the free and land of the brave would elect a racist, misogynist monster as President. I spent the next 4 years doing everything in my power to make sure a Democrat would be the next American president. And yes, we have elected a Democrat in 2020. But, what still puzzles me is that more than 70MM Americans voted for Donald Trump. After everything he has done, they still voted for him. Why?

Who is winning in America? It’s certainly not the 70MM Americans who think Donald Trump is their savior. That whatever circumstance they are in right now would be improved by someone like Donald Trump. A failed businessman, a racist, a rapist, a philanderer, a monster. What does this sound like? Desperation. These Americans are so desperate that they will turn a blind eye to all his faults and errors.

We’ve all been celebrating his loss and demonizing Americans who support him and yes, I did participate in the Donald shaming as well. But I watched a Tik Tok that broke my heart – a young woman was filming a Trump supporting woman at a Trump rally – questioning her support of him. She was half mocking and half serious but she said “I really want to hear your perspective.” And the Trump woman responded “Really, you really do,” my heart sank. She wanted to be heard. You know that feeling, I know that feeling. The feeling of helplessness. The feeling that no matter what you do, how much you scream, no one will hear you or worse, no one cares. That’s what she was feeling.

Why? Why in the wealthiest, most resource rich country in the history of the world – do people feel helpless? So helpless that they support Donald Trump.

Who is winning in America?

The narrative since the election has been about unity. Party unity, country unity. Joe Biden said “There are no red states or blue states, just the United States of America.” MSNBC said that Joe Biden will be a great president because he knows how to work with Republicans. He knows how to reach across the aisle. He knows how to make deals. Nancy Pelosi put out a statement about leftist ideology and how dangerous it is for the Georgia Senate run off races. The Democrats pointed a finger at Alexandra Ocasio- Cortez – blaming her progressive ideology for the losses in the House of Representatives. We need to compromise in order to make deals. That’s how Democracy works. Democracy is about Republicans and Democrats trading this and that in order to make a deal.

Really? That’s what Democracy is? Compromising and making deals? Do you know what this and that is? This and that is our lives, our health, our education, our environment, our livelihood. So, you’re telling me that my Government thinks that trading our lives and our livelihood to make deals is how Democracy works?

Who is winning in America?

January 20, 2021 is right around the corner and we will breathe a sigh of relief when our new President is sworn in except for those 70MM Americans who are afraid for their futures. We cannot discount them, they are Americans. They are Americans who are hurting because of their circumstance. They will elect another demagogue to represent them. This isn’t over. The hate and divisiveness that Donald Trump introduced into the GOP is going to be the norm for that party.

What should we do?

Ask this question to yourself, who is winning in America?

I will leave you with some thought starters:

  • 40MM Americans filed for unemployment during the Pandemic, but Billionaires saw their net worth increase by half a trillion dollars.
  • The Government disproportionately gave more aid to large companies.
  • When the stock market bounced back, the Billionaires made their money back (and more) while the middle and lower classes suffered.
  • American companies keep 60% of their cash overseas and untaxed (roughly, $1.7 trillion) – this is legal.

So, not only did these large companies benefit from our tax dollars and also the gains from the “market” but they also laid off 40MM Americans.

Don’t demonize Trump supporters.

Ask yourself, are you ok with compromising this for that in order to make deals? Is that Democracy is?
